Most Voters Say the Democratic Party is United Behind Obama

o and mJohn McCain has been doing his best to make sure that the Democrats do not unify behind Barack Obama. Anyone who has been watching the convention has seen the negative adds. And they have been spending a lot of time talking about the set that Obama will use for his acceptance speech, saying it looks like a Greek Temple. Actually, to me and most everyone else it looks like the inside of the Lincoln Memorial. And yes I have been there. The latest word from Rasmussen Reports shows that McCain is not getting the results he was hoping for.

The latest poll from Rasmussen Reports shows that 74% of Democrats believe that the party is united with just 14% saying it has not. That leaves 12% who are still undecided. There will always be some of the party’s own members that will feel left out. But if these figures stay the same and some of the Clintonites start to feel the love, it will make all the difference. Remember, the Republican party is far from united. It will be a hard road for McCain if he cannot get enough Democrats to his side to counteract the dissatisfaction of some of his own party with his nomination.

If you look deeper into the poll results, you will see that it is not only the Democrats who feel this way. 52% of all voters who say the Democratic Party is united vs. 30% who say it is not. That leaves 18% who are still undecided. One of the most important figures in the poll is the reaction, of the all so important, independent voters. 26% of republicans say the democrats are united, 52% say they are not and 22% are undecided. With the independents it is 46% who say democrats are united, 30% who say they are not and 24% who are undecided. It is those undecided independents who are going to make the biggest difference. If they feel that the Democrats are united and thereby appear stronger and appealing to a broad base of voters, then they very well could jump to the donkey’s side of the fence.

The state by state polls, which should come out in the following days, will be the measure of how convincing this particular poll was. There are only two months to go and those months will go by very fast. If the Democrats build up enough momentum, enough bounce off of the convention, there may not be enough time for the Republicans to catch up. These silly ads need to stop. The voters want specifics on policies, this is what will decide this election.
