Who Will Shine More? Ron Paul or John McCain?
The twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul will be rocking today with not one but two conventions. While the Republican Party has its convention in the Xcel Energy Center. Ron Paul and his supporters will be on the other side of the river in the Target Center. Who will shine the brightest?
At the Republican convention, things have been sized down a bit. Monday’s schedule was canceled, except for what they were required by law. Tuesday is another story. While they are not doing everything, it will be almost back to normal. It will be a night of speeches, but not from who they were supposed to be. The keynote speaker was to be former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He has been dropped in favor of Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman and Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, both of whom are expected to talk about their friendship with McCain. Thompson was one of McCain’s biggest opponents in the primaries and Lieberman is a Democrat turned independent, who is supporting McCain.
President Bush is another speaker who is being left behind, although he may make a televised appearance. It is up to McCain to decide and that depends on how much he wants to distance himself from the policies of the administration. It can be a damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t situation for McCain. If he does not invite Bush to speak, it would be a real slap in the face and if he does, it will reenforce the belief that electing McCain would be like 4 more years of Bush policies.
Things will be popping much more at the Ron Paul convention with blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and speakers such as former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, Grover G. Norquist, and Tucker Carlson. There will be no memories of John McCain at this one. They will be discussing how to make our government smaller. And having fun at the same time. Ron Paul is inviting the delegates to the regular convention to take some time to come on over for a while and get a copy of his new book. He is expecting a crowd of about 10,000 in total.
So who will make the most noise and get the most attention? A lot will depend on the media and the press. Ron Paul has been getting attention, but will he be making enough noise to get take some attention away from the Republican’s? One thing for sure, it will be an interesting day in the twin cities.
