Will Joe Lieberman be John McCain’s Running Mate?

McCain and LiebermanCould a McCain/ Lieberman ticket be the winning combination for the Republicans in November ? I know McCain is trying to appeal to different fractions, and he is considered to be more to the middle than to the conservative side, but Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, a former Democrat, now independent, is about as different from John McCain as you can get.

Abortion rights is one of the biggest dividing issues between Conservatives and Liberals. If you read John McCain’s web site, the first thing he says is that the issue of abortion should be made by each state. Then he goes on to say that abortion must be ended. Well, if you are going to throw it back to the individual states, then you are making it a non issue in a federal election. There would be nothing he could do about it even if he were elected. Like saying this is what I believe, but I will not do anything about it. Lieberman on the other hand, takes the liberal view. He supported Row v. Wade. McCain did not.

Can picking a running mate with such diverse opinions actually bring the liberal voters over to the McCain camp? And what about the Conservatives, the largest group in the Republican Party? Would a decision like this make them move away, to maybe a third party candidate. It would depend on whether they consider themselves more Republican or more Conservative. If they believe that electing a Republican is the most important thing, then they will stick with McCain. They may not like the idea of someone like Joe Lieberman being the running mate, but beating Barack Obama is more important. Will picking a running mate like Joe Lieberman bring over Democratic voters who do not see Obama as being liberal enough? Not likely.

Of course, this is only guess work at this time. This is one option that McCain is said to be considering. Whether he really is, only McCain knows for sure. He may be just throwing out ideas to see what happens, or to throw attention away from what he is really considering. He does have the advantage of having Obama make his choice known first. He will be able to make his decision at least based in part on what Obama chooses to do. Look for McCain to make his decision known during the Democratic convention. He is doing his best to steal the Democrat’s thunder – TV adds running during the convention for one thing. Announcing his decision during the convention would get him attention for sure. Just what kind of attention, remains to be seen.
