Today I’m thankful for Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson is often dismissed as a drug riddled author who committed suicide as a last hopeless selfish act. In reality he was perhaps the most acute political journalist in the last half century.

Thompson was laughed at, ridiculed and dismissed, but why? His analysis was dead on but nobody listened. Russert in the case of the interview posted below is the typical straight laced journalist trusted by American housewives as they prepare Sunday brunch and have him on in the background. But there is a problem the cliché people that listen to Russert have a vote. And Thompson as troubled as he may be as a man did his homework and predicted the next 6 years of the USA without batting an eye.

Russert was buying the administrations story hook line and sinker. No question. And the same is happening today. This explains everything. This is why the establishment needed to up their game with Barack Obama and layer their rebuttals with race, coolness and charisma. Rather than the brash Presidental style of George W. Bush who simply ran roughshod over the minority of the electorate.

The rage that fills me when I understand that the mainstream media is feeding us this line of lies time and time again is beyond frustrating. That is why the alternative press and many others need to gain a substantial voice in the discussion. The mainstream media is officially panicking and it is time to push forward.

Russert’s question about if Gore would have handled the situation differently shows either just how bogged down he was in the two party paradigm or how much he wants to perpetuate the two party system. NBC was doomed and unfortunately after Russert died the network completely jumped the shark and wandered in to state run media territory.

Thompson’s question of who is in charge cuts to the heart of the problem that is still relevant today. Is Obama truly in charge? Probably not.

Russert sticks up for Bush time and time again. We as consumers of this media have to ask ourselves: Why?
But the problem that mainstream media consumers are confronted with is that they have limited choices and simply switching sides does not solve the problem of the narrow two party paradigm’s scope.

Fox News is really no better than state run media because they are simply angling to regain power and therefore are critiquing the administration but not stepping outside of the lines in critiquing the system or their own party’s previous actions.

HST would have seen right through this Obama lies. Political incorrectness gives you the liberty to cover politics truthfully.

My favorite line from Thompson during the interview is when he sums up the culture of American media by saying:

“…just drum beat of celebrity worship and child funerals and hooded prisoners being lead around Gitmo.”

Time to take a look at reality, without it being thrust upon us. Reality in our own terms is preferred rather than the harsh reality of soup lines.

I thank God today that we still have a thriving alternative media that allows voices like Thompson and others to get the truth out, though it takes some searching, and at times comes echoing down posthumously through the chamber of youtube, it is out there if you are looking.
