Mikhail Gorbachev about Putin, Trump and the whole world

Mikhail Gorbachev about Putin, Trump and the whole world

Mikhail Gorbachev has a deep knowledge about the crisis in the international relationships of two superpowers, Russia and the USA. Nowadays, this diplomatic and political experience of the former USSR leader is just priceless. The ex-head of the Soviet Union now urges Putin and Trump to the dialogue, which can prevent the new war in the world.

According to Mr Gorbachev, the politicians and military leaders of a new era becomes more belligerent and the defence doctrines look dangerous. The atmosphere in media became heavier and unhealthier, and the commentators and TV personas in Russia and US  join the bellicose chorus. Gorbachev thinks, all this looks like if the world is preparing for war.

Mr Gorbachev in his recent interviews urges not to ignore the UN and its Security Council. Both US and Russia are the members of this body. The UNSC bears primary responsibility for peace and security on the planet, the Council is able to take the first step in the process of the easing of hostility or strained relations, especially between the superpowers.

In the eighties, Mikhail Gorbachev and his counterpart Ronald Reagan made an impossible thing: they started a constructive dialogue, which brought a new breath into the relations between the USSR and the USA.

Gorbachev about the role of USSR in the 80s arms race

The current political atmosphere is very heavy, warns Mr Gorbachev, so, it is the right time to appoint a Security Council meeting at the level of heads of state. This meeting could adopt a resolution, which says that nuclear war is unacceptable under any circumstances, and the nuclear arms race is just the aimless waste of state budget funds.

The ex-president of the USSR believes the initiative to adopt such a resolution at the UN level should come from the world leaders — Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. These two nations hold over 90% of the planet’s nuclear arsenals and therefore bear a special responsibility for the fate of the world.
