Your 1984 reference reminds me how the word "liberal" has been made into a bad word.

"Liberal" and "libertarian" bear non-coincidental resemblance to the word "liberty", and to me, classical liberalism is indistinguishable from the libertarianism in meaning the pursuit of freedom.

Of course classical liberalism once simply called liberalism, but a distinction must now be made between classical liberalism and liberalism in today's usage because people are increasingly equating liberalism with socialism.

But liberalism is to freedom as socialism is to slavery, so Orwell's 1984 scenario of freedom equaling slavery has happened.
