Obama Brings up McCain’s Past -Hitting Back?
The gloves are coming off early between the two presumptive Presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama. First, McCain stated that he believes Obama would favor Hamas and would be friendly to Iran and now Obama is bringing up an incident from McCain’s past, 1989’s to be precise,- the Keating Five.
This was in the middle of the Savings and Loans scandal and five senators, McCain along with Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH) and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI) were accused of helping Charles H. Keating, Jr., who was the chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association. The Senate Ethics Committee conducted an investigation and determined that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle had “substantially and improperly interfered”with the investigation of Lincoln Savings. They also found that Glenn and McCain had been only minimally involved. McCain has apologized for his involvement.
According to Obama, if his past such as the controversy over his retired pastor Jeremiah Wright and his connection with radicles from the 1960’s if fair game, then so is anything in McCain’s past.
If this much negativity is coming out when neither of them are the official candidate of their party, I can just imagine how much there will be if they do. Anyone who runs for any public office who has anything in his or her past has to expect it to come out. There is always someone somewhere who would love to spill the beans so to say, but there are issues that should be taking up the candidates time. Anyone who thinks that this is going to be a positive campaign is dreaming. There will be no “new politics” a la Obama.
The question is does the American voter care about something that happened years ago and was made public 17 years ago or are they interested in what the candidates propose to do. Will the negative aspects of the campaign affect the votes to the point that there will be a good deal of voter apathy by the time November comes around leading to a low turn out? The American public does not want candidates who keep slamming the other because the other candidate did it first. If they are going to attack each other, let it be on the issues, unless there is something hidden in the deep dark past of one of them that is so serious that it would be deemed criminal.
