Huckabee Trudges Forward

Today John McCain continued with his push forward to consolidate GOP support when he left a meeting in Washington with leading GOP House member’s support. Despite this news, Mike Huckabee continues to push forward, constantly reminding supporters that John McCain is still approximately 300 delegates short of the 1,191 needed to end the race for the GOP nomination.

Huckabee is looking to Wisconsin and Texas to slow McCain’s push toward the magic number of delegates (1191). He will be making several stops in Wisconsin in the coming days where he hopes to appeal to the states small business owners and evangelicals. Huckabee also has high hopes for Texas, a state where he claims to have a strong network of support on the ground, right next door to the former governor’s home state of Arkansas.

If Huckabee and Ron Paul are able to keep McCain from reaching the 1,191 total by the time results are final on March 4th, McCain will likely have to wait six weeks before he is able to win another state. The only primary to be held in that six week gap is in Mississippi where Huckabee is the favorite. So if Huckabee decides to hang tough for those six weeks, essentially taunting McCain for failing to secure the nomination, McCain will begin to look vulnerable.

A popular topic of conversation during those six weeks will likely become what Romney is planning to do with the 286 delegates he has acquired. Ron Paul has also acquired between 14-46 delegates up until this point in the process, and those delegates might also come into play. So when the McCain camp recently released a memo saying that Huckabee is mathematically out of the race, it is just not true and only further exposes the desperation within the McCain camp.

It is clear this is why the leaders in the GOP are desperately trying to call this race in favor of McCain and hoping the voting public buys into the pitch. Because if this race drags on into late April, unlike the Democratic race where there is much excitement on both sides, the uncertainty and lack of unity in the GOP will expose the weakness of the candidates.

Regardless of the results in the coming weeks, Huckabee has established himself as a candidate who has received substantial support through out the South by generating formidable a grassroots efforts and supporter enthusiasm, both of which McCain has little. When asked to speculate on possible positions this support could lead to outside of the Oval Office, Huckabee said there has not been any talk between himself and McCain as to a VP slot. When asked about the possibility of running for the Senate Huckabee responed in typical Huckabee fashion, “”There is a greater chance that I would dye my hair green, and get tattoos all over my body and do a rock tour with Amy Winehouse than there is that I would run for the Senate.”

  1. Thank you for an op-ed piece that actually tells the truth: there IS still a choice for conservative voters, and it is Mike Huckabee. This can be a brokered convention, and Republicans still have a chance to elect a President who has a TOUGH stand in illegal immigration, Second Amendment rights, and myriad other issues we believe in. Huckabee is the only candidate who has executive experience- 10+ years of it- and is a brilliant, articulate spokesman. Do not believe the pundits who tell you McCain has won- he hasn’t!

  2. Fucka Hucka Bee
