“Thank God for dead soldiers” church will be forced to pay 11 million
11 Million sure is a lot, especially for this small church. Why this church picketed a “gay” dead soldiers grave holding signs that say “Thank God for dead soldiers” and signs that say God hates gays, is beyond me. I always encourage freedom of speech… always. This is more along the lines of hate. This did hurt the family of the dead soldier. I feel 11 Million is really beyond just… It does send a message. My guess is the church will never be able to pay this full amount. How many people actually would support a church like this?
What do you guys think? Do you think the church was within their rights?

they may very well be within their rights as long as they are on public ground… However their lack of class and totally tasteless way to spread their message of hate makes me want to picket their church….with a big sign that says “God Hates Noone… But He strongly dislikes YOU” LOL

I think this creates an uncomfortable situation for many people. On the one hand we all believe in the constitution and the right to freedom of speech. However, I’m sure a lot of people feel very upset about the actions of this church and feel that there should be a way to discourage this behaviour or even punish this behaviour. But the two seem to conflict. This is how I rationalize it:
My company has a pretty decent sick-day benefit, for which I am very grateful. You could say, that by my companies policy I have a ‘right’ to take a sick-day when I need it. However some poeple may abuse this right and when they are caught the company may deem it appropriate to punish the individual.
In my mind these people abuse the right to freedom of speech and use it to spread hate and cause pain to innocent people. I think in this case, one could plausibly deem this to be a dishonorable and maybe even punishable abuse.
I accept that this argument may be seriously flawed, but in my heart I feel that what these poeple are doing is wrong. If you’re happy that soldiers are dying and you hate gays then you are entitled to your opinions. Go ahead and post them on your website etc, but harassing families at funerals, people who are already hurting so much, that’s just cruel, malicious and above all, downright un-christian.
