An earthquake occurred in southern Italy.

An earthquake of magnitude 4 occurred on Wednesday morning in the province of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv) reported.

According to seismologists, the strongest earthquake was recorded at 07.49, its magnitude ranged from 3.6 to 4.1. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the Calabrian town of Samo; the source lay at a depth of 14 kilometers.

The vibrations of the earth’s surface were clearly felt by residents of many settlements in the south of the Apennine Peninsula, as well as in Sicily.

The mayor of Samo, Paolo Pulitano, said that when the earthquake struck, many residents panicked.

“There was a fairly strong shock. People left their homes in fear and are still on the street,” he said.


According to the mayor, at the moment there is no information about damage as a result of the earthquake. Representatives of technical services conduct inspections and checks of city facilities.

Authorities in a number of localities in Reggio Calabria took precautionary measures and canceled classes in local schools.
