Borrell called for postponing the discussion of security guarantees for Russia.

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, called for first discussing security guarantees for Ukraine, and only then for Russia.

“As for security guarantees for Russia, we will talk about this later,” the politician said, speaking at a forum of the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris.

He argues that the conflict in Ukraine should be resolved in accordance with all norms of international law by providing security guarantees primarily to Kyiv.

In addition, Borrell believes that the more destruction Ukraine undergoes, the higher its chances of joining the European Union.

At the end of last year, Russia published draft agreements with the US and NATO on security guarantees. Among the demands of Moscow was the refusal to further expand the alliance to the east, to join Ukraine to it and to establish military bases in post-Soviet countries. In addition, it was about the non-deployment of strike weapons near the borders of Russia and the withdrawal of the alliance’s forces in Eastern Europe to the positions of 1997. On all these questions, the West answered with a refusal.
