China has tested a detonation hypersonic engine powered by coal powder

The new fuel format will be 20% cleaner and more efficient than similar blends. It is planned to use ethylene vapor mixed with coal powder. This is great for igniting fuel and starting the detonation process.

Scientists at Nanjing University in China have unveiled a system that is six times the speed of sound. The result was a type of engine applicable for flights at different speeds, including on a hypersonic aircraft.

In May 2022, the team introduced a similar kerosene and ethylene engine. The development of a hypersonic engine on ammonia is currently underway.
