Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Kefei: US promised not to support Taiwan independence

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei warned that the Chinese military would not sit idly by if U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

Kefei recalled that the United States promised not to support the independence of Taiwan, so China demands to confirm this with real actions.

“But if the American side continues to act in its own way, the Chinese army will not sit idly by and take all measures to stop external interference and separatist attempts to separate Taiwan, resolutely stand up for state sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Pelosi is the third most important person in the US government, a Defense Department spokesman said, so her visit to Taiwan would violate the “one China” principle, as well as the provisions of the three joint communiqués that were adopted by the two states. In addition, the US politician’s visit will aggravate the situation in the Taiwan Strait, Kefei stressed.
