Death toll from northeast Italy glacier collapse rises to six

The collapse of part of the glacier in the Dolomites in northeastern Italy has killed six people, the mountain rescue service of the Veneto region said. Earlier it was reported about 5 dead and seven injured.

The collapse of the glacier caused an avalanche of snow, rocks and ice that covered the side of the mountain, along which several groups of tourists climbed to the top.

Paolo Bottachin, Assessor (Regional Minister) of the Veneto Region for Civil Defense, said the number of victims reached 8, one of them is in serious condition. The search for a dozen more people continues.

Rescue operations are complicated by the risk of new collapses. Helicopters and dog handlers are on site.

The victims were taken to hospitals in the neighboring cities of Bolzano, Trento, Belluno and Treviso.

According to local media, the day before, record temperatures were recorded in the Marmolada region, 10 degrees above normal.
