Donald Trump vows to shut controversial Trump Foundation

Donald Trump is going to shut his Trump Foundation, which becomes more and more controversial structure. This week, the President-elect has announced the plans regarding this charitable organisation.

New York’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is looking for details regarding the suspected ‘impropriety’ at the Trump Foundation. Donald Trump strongly denies any imperfections in the accounting, although an investigation into Foundation practices continues.

Mr Trump said he wanted to avoid ‘even the appearance’ of any conflict of interest and that’s why he is going to shut the charitable organisation. However, the attorney general’s office said Mr Trump could not shut the Foundation while the investigation was continuing.

On Saturday, President-elect said that:

“the foundation has done enormous good works over the years in contributing millions of dollars to countless worthy groups, including supporting veterans, law enforcement officers and children.
“However, to avoid even the appearance of any conflict with my role as president I have decided to continue to pursue my strong interest in philanthropy in other ways.”

Trump Foundation is a controversial foundation, why?

New York’s Attorney General in September announced the intentions of his office to ensure the Trump Foundation was “complying with the laws that govern charities in New York”.

“We have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety from that point of view,”

said Mr Schneiderman at the time.

The first move in the investigation was made in June when US Attorney General’s office formally questioned a donation ($25,000) made to a group backing Republican Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in 2013. This payment was made at a time when Mrs Bondi’s office was reportedly considering whether to open a fraud investigation into Trump University.
