EP President Metsola names gas fields in Cyprus promising for the EU

President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola called the gas deposits discovered in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus promising.

As Metsola explained, the discovery of the field is important and promises to increase gas production in the European Union (EU) without dependence on supplies from third countries. She called the news promising as the EU seeks to replace Russian energy sources.

According to Metsola, the energy crisis has “brought EU member states even closer.” The discovery of gas fields is good news for the entire bloc and “makes us all stronger,” she concluded.

Earlier, the French energy company TotalEnergies and the Italian Eni announced the discovery of large deposits of natural gas off the coast of Cyprus, their volume is estimated at 70 billion cubic meters. We are talking about the Calypso-1 gas field, discovered in 2018.

The development of new gas fields for Europe remains an extremely important task against the backdrop of plans to minimize the supply of fuel from Russia. For this purpose, the region also plans to increase the use of alternative energy sources and increase supplies from other suppliers.
