Former Turkish Foreign Minister Deniz Baikal has died.

Former Turkish Foreign Minister and former chairman of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deniz Baikal has died at the age of 85, current party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said on Saturday.

“I learned with sadness about the death of the deputy from Antalya, the leader of our party, who loved Turkey and CHP Deniz Baikal,” Kilicdaroglu wrote on Twitter.

He did not specify the cause of death.
During his long political career, Baikal was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister (1995-1996), Minister of Finance and Energy, Speaker of Parliament, led the opposition CHP for more than 18 years intermittently.
