German health minister calls for national lockdown to rein in third wave

Germany’s health minister has called for tightening measures in a surge of COVID-19 cases. The most reasonable solution is the national lockdown.

Jens Spahn, the top medical official, urges Germans to be socially responsible while the country is ready to face the third wave of the novel pathogen. According to the health minister, “measures that are systematic and as nationally unified as possible”, instead of the current patchwork of regional rules which have drawn criticism from Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On Friday, at a press conference, Spah added that private contacts have to be limited as possible. No private contact is an optimum, taking into account the current alarming situation, The National reported.

To accelerate the immunization campaign, the German government has started talks with Russia regarding supplying its COVID vaccine, the Sputnik V.
