Hungary will not veto the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Hungary will not veto the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Hungary will not veto the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, because community rules do not provide for such a possibility; instead, Budapest proposes not to put the issue on the agenda of the summit in December, since it is clear in advance that there will be no agreement among member countries , Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.

“Hungary will not veto, because there is no veto, Hungary will prevent a common decision. EU rules say that there are certain topics on which a decision can only be made if all member states agree,” Orban said.

According to him, a general decision by the EU to begin negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU can only be made if there is agreement among all member countries.

“That is, the point is not that there is a solution and we are vetoing it, but that there is no solution,” Orban explained.

He stressed that “the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU today does not coincide with Hungarian national interests.”

“You can see in advance that there will be no agreement, so I proposed and propose not to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU… and not to put it on the agenda,” Orban said.

According to him, it is wrong for the EU to “force” European leaders to put an “unprepared” topic on the agenda and discuss it.
