in Finland proposed to place a NATO base in South Karelia, on the border with Russia

The mayor of the Finnish city of Lappeenranta, Kimmo Järvu, proposed to place the base of the North Atlantic Alliance on the territory of South Karelia, a region of Finland bordering Russia.

“I heard that there are about the airport. It could well be used if the defense forces so desire. I can’t say anything about the deployment of defense forces and military units, I’m not an expert,” the head of the city said.

Previously, there was an opinion that the entry into NATO of Sweden and Finland would lead to the complete encirclement of Kaliningrad by the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. Russia will have to take retaliatory measures.
On June 30, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the decision to strengthen the US military presence in Europe and expand the North Atlantic Alliance to the east violates the Russia-NATO Founding Act.
