Iran tighten rules for running for presidency

In Iran, the citizens with dual nationals and those who hold the foreign residency, are banned from running in presidential elections, Reuters reported.

The Iranian authorities have announced the new measures regarding the applicants who are going to run for the presidency. After speculation that some officials may hold Green Cards from the United States, the officials said it is not true.

The stricter measure has passed in a parliamentary session carried live on state-run radio. Despite it still needs to be approved by a high clerical council before it takes effect, the measure caused the debates in media.

In fact, Iran is due to hold the next presidential elections in June 2021. The sitting President Hassan Rouhani cannot run because he has already served two consecutive four-year terms.
