Largest migrant caravan leaves Mexico for US

At least 6,000 migrants, many of them from Venezuela, left southern Mexico for the United States.

It is reported that this is a journey to the Summit of the Americas, which began in Los Angeles. Migration activists said the group could become one of the largest migrant caravans in the region in recent years.

According to some sources – more than 9.5 thousand people left the border town of Tapachula. Mexico’s National Institute for Migration did not provide an estimate of the size of the group, nor did it provide any further comment on the event.

“These are people from countries collapsing from poverty and violence,” said caravan organizer Luis Garcia Villagran, “We urge those who attend the summit … to see what is happening, and what could happen even more often in Mexico, if something is not done soon.”

US President Joe Biden is expected to announce an aid package to a number of Latin American countries at the summit.
