Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov urges diplomatic solution to N. Korea crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a phone call from his German counterpart on Thursday. Both ministers agreed that North Korean crisis should have only a diplomatic solution.

Mr Lavrov said the current N. Korea crisis is a very complicated, and if the United States will break the agreement and reinstate those unilateral sanctions against Iran, which were dropped under 2015 agreement, it will be a very wrong signal to North Korea.

During the General Assembly in New York, Sergei Lavrov urged all parties to stick to a diplomatic approach to Pyongyang crisis, condemning both the reckless tests of Pyongyang and belligerent rhetoric of the US. The Russian minister warned that every side needs to calm down the hotheads, the North Korean knot can be untied only if all parties understand that they need pauses, they need contacts.

Lavrov about Iran and North Korea situation

The Russian diplomat Lavrov warned that if a nuclear agreement with Iran fails, the North Korean government could be discouraged from making any deals on curbing its own nuclear and missile programs in exchange for easing sanctions.

“If the agreement on the Iranian nuclear problem fails, North Korea will say: why should we negotiate with you, if you’re unable to do so?”

Russian Foreign Minister said.

During the discussion at the UN the crisis on Korean Peninsula, Sergei Lavrov lashed out at ex-president Barack Obama for planting a “time bomb” that has deepened the worst rift between the two powers since the Cold War and frustrated cooperation in addressing global crises from Iran to North Korea.
