Sandu approved the recognition of the Romanian language as the state language.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced on Wednesday that she had signed a law that recognizes Romanian instead of Moldovan as the state language of the republic.

The Parliament of Moldova last Thursday voted 58 deputies to approve the renaming of the state language from Moldovan to Romanian. According to the approved bill, the words “Moldovan language” in any grammatical form are replaced by the phrase “Romanian language”. Moreover, the amendment will even be made to the constitution, although this usually requires a referendum.

“Today I signed a law confirming the historical and indisputable truth: the state language of Moldova is Romanian,” Sandu wrote on Facebook.

According to her, Moldovans speak one of the official languages of the European Union. She expressed confidence that the Romanian language could become a “catalyst for the consolidation of society.”
