Scotland announces new independence referendum

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has proposed a referendum on independence from the UK in a speech to Parliament.

“The Scottish Government is proposing that an independence referendum be held on 19 October 2023,” she said.

In early June, the politician announced her intention to achieve a referendum on independence in order to make Scotland “more prosperous and fair.” Sturgeon noted that the country will not depend on the decisions of the Westminster government, for which she did not vote.
