Slovakia gets new government after PM Igor Matoviс stepped aside

The EU country will get a new government after the current prime minister Igor Matovic stepped aside amid the pandemic crisis.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova’s decision to relaunch the Cabinet allows the EU nation to end a monthlong crisis that began when the country’s now-former prime minister, Igor Matovic, unilaterally bought Russia’s vaccine against the COVID-19.

The new government will be head by Eduard Heger, a finance minister. Most of the other ministers will be retained, PoliticoEU has learned on Thursday. In fact, PM Matovic has to step down after buying 2 million Sputnik V vaccine doses without consulting other ministers. Now Heger has replaced Matovic as head of the government.

Commenting on the current changes in the government, the Median SK agency said that 83 percent of Slovaks are dissatisfied with the coalition’s performance, with Matovic’s Ordinary People scoring the lowest of the four parties.
