Sustainable face masks made from seaweed

Sustainable face masks made from seaweed

The coronavirus made manufacturers revise the choice of the raw materials for the personal protective equipment. New face masks made from seaweeds provide breathability and skin-friendliness.

The textile supplier PYRATES has presented natural, reusable face masks made from the seaweeds. The PPE is certified by EUROFINS, and follow the European Union’s CWA regulation.

The organic face masks are taking care of the skin and inhibiting the formation of free reactive oxygen species formed in living organisms, Springwise reports.

The masks made by the Spanish company contain their interior composition of PYRATEX® cosmetic II. That secret ingredient is high-end, knit fabrics which are made in Europe from either vegetable, upcycled or biodegradable fibres. The vegetal fibres all originate from different plants, which give the fabrics their unique body-caring properties, tested and certified by EU textile institutes.

To manufacture the biodegradable and breathable mask, PYRATEX uses seaweed from the Northern Atlantic. the raw material transforms into a powder that gets combined with cellulose fibre.

It is a commonly known fact that the seaweed is rich for Vitamin E and mineral content, such as sodium, magnesium and calcium. The natural fibre Seacell inhibits the formation of free reactive oxygen species as well.

Amid coronacrisis in Europe, Seacell is blended with a GOTS certified organic cotton fibre and the yarn is created using spinning machines. Three different yarners in Italy, Greece and Portugal are working with the Spanish manufacturer. The fabric is finished in Italy and tinted with natural dyes. The result is unique, reusable, skin-caring face mask.
