The solemn ceremony of reburial of the remains of 14 Soviet soldiers discovered in different cities of Hungary over the past two years took place at a cemetery in the center of Budapest.

The remains of 14 Soviet soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War in Hungary and were discovered during construction work in 2021-2022 in Budapest, Debrecen, Szigethalom, Nyiregyhaza, Varpalota and Kern were reburied in the “Russian” section of the Kerepesi cemetery, where the country’s largest military memorial of Soviet soldiers, founded in 1946 and numbering seven thousand graves.

“In the bloody battles on the territory of Hungary, the Red Army suffered heavy losses. More than 140 thousand people died on the battlefields. The memory of each of these heroes is sacred to us. Careful attitude to the historical past at all times was the key to successful development and a worthy future. The feat of the Soviet of the people during the Great Patriotic War is immortal. May the military memorial complex of Kerepeshy become a worthy resting place for the dead heroes. Eternal memory to them!” Tigran Gharibyan, Counsellor-Envoy of the Russian Embassy in Hungary, said during the ceremony.
