The EC called on EU countries to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources.

The European Union must accelerate the transition to renewable energy and reduce consumption due to the situation in Ukraine, said Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the European Commission.

“Everyone understood that the urgency of the energy transition has become even greater now against the background of this war. First of all, we need to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources. It takes time, it is not easy, but we are able to do it. It is also urgent to reduce consumption. And here I remain disappointed that political leaders in member states are not being clear enough about this need,” Timmermans said in an interview with the French newspaper Monde when asked if the conflict in Ukraine could throw Europe off its trajectory.
