The EP proposed to develop the production of fertilizers in Greece

Greek MEP Emmanuel Fragkos sent a letter to the European Commission, in which he spoke about the possibilities for the production of fertilizers in his country.

According to Fragkos, as a result of research conducted by the National Technical University of Athens, extensive deposits of minerals and rocks rich in phosphates were discovered in Greece. Among them are mineral salt, mineral gypsum, various clays, crystalline limestone, peat deposits suitable for crop production.

These reserves are enough to produce 42 million tons of bioorganic and chemical fertilizers, the parliamentarian added.

“Their extraction and production require energy-intensive processing. Natural gas deposits in Corfu and Epirus can also be used to produce fertilizers on the Greek mainland,” he said in a letter.

In his address, Fragkos stressed that Russia remains a major exporter of fertilizers, which are of key importance for agriculture.

According to the deputy, despite the efforts to prevent disruptions in the food market, advocated by the European Central Bank, problems in this area are unlikely to be avoided.

In this regard, he asked if the EC is discussing with the Greek authorities the possibilities for the production of fertilizers and what financing instruments can be used for this.
