The EU urged China not to supply weapons to Russia and threatened with consequences.

The European Union, along with the United States, are calling on China not to supply weapons to Russia and are warning of “consequences” if the request is not heard, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with CNN.

“We asked them not to supply weapons to Russia. We tell them bilaterally, but also publicly, that this should not be done,” he said.

US officials have previously said that China occasionally provides “non-lethal” assistance to Russia in its special operation in Ukraine, but is considering the supply of weapons and ammunition. To prevent this, the Americans publicly threaten the Chinese with the loss of Western investment and the withdrawal of Western companies.

Asked about the possibility of European sanctions against China, Scholz said: “I think that this will have consequences. But now we are at the stage where we make it clear that this should not be.”

The chancellor added that he was “relatively optimistic that in this case our requests will have an effect.”
