Members of the liberal faction of the European Parliament proposed to invite the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, to parliamentary hearings to discuss the reforms he is implementing in the social network.

A corresponding letter was sent to the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the faction said on Twitter.

“Hearings with Musk in the European Parliament would allow MEPs to clarify his actions and plans. The direction of the movement is worrying: freedom of speech – yes. MEPs, in particular, fear a “weakening of norms” on the social network, while the “more important than ever fight against election interference, disinformation and hate speech” is being waged.

Earlier, the owner of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, acquired Twitter for $44 billion. He promised to modernize the social network, making it open to all opinions, announced the gradual return of previously deleted accounts, and has already managed to fire not only the former management, but also some of the employees of the social network. Among Musk’s initiatives is a paid subscription for verified accounts.

Earlier, the European Union approved new rules for the operation of major global digital platforms aimed at combating illegal content.
In the EU, in particular, there will be a “Digital Services Law”, which will establish certain restrictions on digital content, as well as a “Digital Markets Law”, which regulates the way technology giants do business.
