The government of Burkina Faso has denounced the agreement on the presence of the French Armed Forces, after which the military must leave the country within a month.

“The government… has denounced the agreement that, since 2018, regulated the presence of the French armed forces. The denunciation, carried out on January 18, 2023, according to the terms of the agreement, gives the French armed forces one month to leave the territory of Burkina Faso,” the message says.

It is noted that citizens have been regularly demonstrating for several months in support of the withdrawal of the French military from the country.

At the end of September 2022, the media reported that a group of military men in Burkina Faso, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the removal of the head of the transitional government of the country, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the suspension of the constitution in the country and the dissolution of the government. Damiba announced his readiness to voluntarily resign if the rebels fulfilled several conditions.

Burkina Faso, located in the Sahel region, is trying to contain a radical jihadist offensive that has been going on since 2015.
