The German government will allow children to change gender once a year

German citizens will be able to change their gender once a year without physical changes in the body, said German Family Affairs Minister Lisa Paus.

It will be possible to complete the procedure at the registration office, and no court or operation will be required. The new law will replace the rule that was passed in 1980. German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann noted that it had become “completely unconstitutional.

Lisa Paus added that the new law will promote gender diversity and improve the lives of transgender people. She noted that now society is ahead of German legislation.

“We in the government decided to create a legislative framework for an open, diverse and modern society,” the minister said.

Citizens from the age of 14 can use the procedure. Gender reassignment will also be available to children under 14, but with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
