The Senate of Berlin activated the contingency plan due to the massive influx of asylum seekers, including from Ukraine.

Currently, a large tent has been opened on the site of the former Tegel Airport, accommodating about 900 people. Initially, the building was intended to accommodate Ukrainians who were not considered asylum seekers, but today fewer Ukrainians reach the German capital than expected, but in May alone, about 1 thousand asylum seekers arrived at the refugee reception centers in Berlin. Among them: 456 Moldovans, 147 Georgians, 92 Afghans, 82 Syrians, 70 Turks, 58 Vietnamese and 16 Iranians.

At the same time, the Berlin Senate accused other federal states of directing the flow of asylum seekers to the German capital. As a result, about five hundred more people are expected in Berlin in July.

“The situation has worsened,” said social affairs senator Katia Kipping. “Most of the other federal states actually have a moratorium on entry for people who apply for asylum for the first time.”
