A mass shooting in the American city of Lewiston in Maine claimed the largest number of lives of all cases of gun violence in the United States in 2023, according to published data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which collects information on all incidents involving firearms in the country.

According to the organization’s table, 16 people are listed as dead as a result of the shooting in Lewiston. GVA’s casualty figures for this incident are the highest of any gun violence incident in the United States for 2023. In second place is the shooting in Monterey Park, California, where 11 people were killed in June.
