The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Ankara cannot recognize the accession of four regions to the Russian Federation.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the heads of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions signed agreements on the annexation of regions to Russia and the formation of new subjects within the Russian Federation.

“This decision (on accession) is a gross violation of the established principles of international law and cannot be accepted by us,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry reiterated its support for a settlement of the crisis “on the basis of a just peace to be achieved through negotiations.”
