The UN changed the name of Turkey

The UN changed the name of Turkey

The UN has granted Turkey’s request to change the name of the republic in all official documents, said the representative of the UN Secretary General Stefan Dujarric.

“Republic of Turkey (Republic of Turkey) has been renamed Republic of Türkiye,” Dujarric said.

According to him, the change came into force immediately after the appeal of the Turkish authorities.

The short version of the country name will now look like Türkiye instead of Turkey. Turkey’s place in alphabetical order will not change, Dujarric added.

As Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu explained, the change in the spelling of Turkey’s name was adopted as part of Ankara’s steps aimed at “increasing the country’s prestige in the international arena.”

Earlier, the Thai authorities decided to change the official name of Bangkok for writing in foreign languages in Latin script from Bangkok to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

Decisions to bring the names of capitals in foreign languages more in line with the sound of the original local ones have already been taken by a number of states, including China, which changed Beijing to Beijing, and Myanmar, which renamed Rangoon to Yangon.
