The UN reminded rich countries of financing adaptation to climate change.

Rich countries should allocate $100 billion to adapt countries most affected by climate change, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday.

“Developed countries must meet their commitment to double adaptation funding and reach the $100 billion target urgently, without delay,” he said at the International Conference on Assistance to Pakistan in Geneva.

Guterres reiterated his call for reform of the global financial architecture, in particular the multilateral development banks.

The UN Secretary-General is also calling for greater efforts to ensure that everyone around the world has early warning systems for climate catastrophes within five years.

Pakistan and the UN are holding a major conference in Geneva on Monday aimed at organizing support for the country’s recovery from devastating floods.

As a result of the monsoon rains and floods in Pakistan that began in June 2022, more than 1.6 thousand people were killed and more than 12 thousand were injured. In total, more than 33 million people were affected by the flood. The worst damage was caused by the floods in the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. At least 2 million houses were damaged and more than 1 million livestock were killed. The Pakistani authorities declared a state of emergency and called on other countries and international organizations to provide all possible assistance.
