The United States commented on the conversation between Xi Jinping and Zelensky.

The U.S. welcomes Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky, but it’s not yet clear if it will give a boost to peace,  John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the National Security Council said.

“We welcome the news that there has been a phone call between President Xi and … Zelensky… That’s good. But whether it will lead to any meaningful movement towards peace, a plan or a proposal, I don’t think we know right now.”  he said at a media briefing.

Kirby added that Washington had no prior knowledge of the conversation, but recalled that the United States had long urged the Chinese leadership to listen not only to Russia, but also to Ukraine. The US administration has previously criticized Chinese peace proposals, saying that an immediate ceasefire is unacceptable.
