Turkey: At least nine dead in Ankara high-speed train crash

Turkey mourns: the fatal train crash killed at least nine people, Guardian reported on Thursday. A high-speed train has collided with another rail engine early in the morning, injuring 47 on a pedestrian overpass and inside the train.

In Ankara, people from carriages trapped beneath the mangled metal wreckage of the overpass at the Marsandiz train station. City authorities said three prosecutors were assigned to investigate why and at what speed the trains were travelling when the crash occurred. The cause of a fatal crash is still unknown, the private NTV TV channel reported right after the crash. One of the working versions is the snowy conditions. According to media, at least two cars derailed while parts of the overpass collapsed on to the high-speed train.

The governor of Ankara, Vasip Sahin, told reporters the crash was caused by the high-speed train hitting the engine that was checking the tracks at a station. “Our hope is that there are no other victims,” he added.

The tragic accident occurred at about 06:30 local time, the emergency workers arrived at the place immediately, all injured people were transported to the hospital, three of them were in the critical condition. In the morning, 206 passengers were on board the high-speed train, Anadolu Agency reports.
