Turkey blocks talks on Finland and Sweden joining NATO

NATO ambassadors met today to start negotiations in connection with the application of Sweden and Finland to join the alliance countries, but Ankara blocked the negotiations, which contributed to the suspension of voting.

In this case, the approval by the alliance of the first stage of the application is in jeopardy. The agreement was supposed to take place within a few weeks.

All countries that are part of NATO, and these are 30 states, must ratify them. But such a process can only begin if these countries are formally invited to join the alliance.

Not so long ago, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he could not support the inclusion of Sweden and Finland in the military bloc, since in this case the organization would become “a place where there will be many representatives of terrorists.”
