Turkey could lose up to 7 people as a result of the counterattack of the Syrian Kurds

The Turkish side suffered serious losses after the counterattack of the Syrian Kurds

It became known that representatives of the Kurdish paramilitaries unexpectedly attacked an organized military base of the Turkish Armed Forces, located near Tall Rifat in northern Syria. As a result, the Turkish military could lose up to seven people. At the same time, the portal notes, according to Syrian sources, the Kurdish side managed to avoid losses.

Ankara has not yet commented on the information about the attack by the Syrian Kurds.

On June 1, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the launch of a new anti-terrorist operation in northern Syria.

“A new phase of the formation [in Syria] of a “security zone” 30 kilometers inland from the border with Turkey is beginning. We are clearing Tall Rifat and Manbij from terrorists,” he said.

Earlier, the Turkish President stressed that the Turkish armed forces will conduct military operations in northern Syria until they manage to achieve the complete destruction of terrorist organizations.

Ankara recognizes a number of Kurdish formations, including the PKK, as extremist. Since the 1980s, the parties have repeatedly concluded and violated truces, but in 2015 the PKK refused to make peace. Since the start of the Syrian war in the early 2010s, there have been regular clashes between Kurds and Turks on Syrian territory.
