Turkey said that sanctions against Russia will be legitimate only if they are introduced within the framework of the UN

Turkey believes that in the situation with Ukraine, anti-Russian sanctions will be legitimate only if the decision on them is made under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). This was stated by the head of the communications department of the Turkish presidential administration, Fahrettin Altun.

He recalled that Western sanctions were imposed on the Turkish defense industry for political reasons. In this regard, Ankara recognizes only the UN-confirmed measures.
Thus, he answered a journalist’s question about whether sanctions are a good way to “stop” Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Altun also added that Turkey will never advocate prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, Ankara calls for a just peace.

At the same time, he added that there are states that believe that the prolongation of the Ukrainian conflict will bring them benefits.

“They think that Russia will be weakened if the war drags on, and they only support the Ukrainians to the extent that they can drag out the war,” the Turkish official said.
