US-led coalition leaves another military base in Iraq

The US-led coalition has already handed over to Iraqi forces another military base, located west of Baghdad. As Andalou Agency reports, it is 6th base handed over by Coalition forces.

The U.S. cobbled a coalition together in 2014 with the stated aim of fighting the terrorist group Daesh/ISIS. Now, the international forces are leaving Irag gradually, so far, they have withdrawn from six military bases across Iraq over the past few weeks.

According to the military source, on Tuesday morning the Coalition forces withdrew from its military base in Abu Gharib area after they handed over the base to the Iraqi Armed Forces.

In recent weeks, some military bases hosting the coalition forces in Iraq have come under attacks by Iraqi groups. Yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. In fact, such attacks intensified after the killing of Iranian top general Qassem Soleimani in January.

As the White House insists, the withdrawal from the military bases in Iraq is just a response to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Middle Eastern country. In addition, leaving the military bases is a redeployment the international troops to protect them from possible attacks by Iranian-affiliated terroristic cells in Iraq.
