US solar-powered drone crashes after 64 days of flight

In the United States, after 64 days of continuous flight, a solar-powered Zephyr-8 unmanned aerial vehicle manufactured by the European concern Airbus crashed.

“Zephyr encountered circumstances that ended in the termination of its flight. No one was injured. The analysis of the data obtained from the results of more than 1,500 hours of mission in the stratosphere is underway,” Airbus said.

Communication with Zephyr-8 was lost on August 19 over the US state of Arizona. The location of the drone has not yet been determined. It is noted that the device has set a new record for the duration of an unmanned flight, more than doubling the previous maximum value.

Zephyr-8 flights took place at the level of the stratosphere. The length of the apparatus was about 25 meters with a mass of only 75 kg.
