Guterres urged to urgently secure applications with artificial intelligence.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has proposed a code of conduct on digital platforms, within which he calls, among other things, to urgently take measures to ensure that all applications using artificial intelligence are safe, the press service of the organization said.

The Secretary General presented an analytical note proposing the creation of a “code of conduct to ensure the integrity of information on digital platforms.”

Among other things, the code calls on all interested players to “take urgent and immediate action to ensure that all applications using artificial intelligence are safe, reliable, respect ethics and do not violate human rights.”

Also, according to Guterres’ proposal, governments, technology companies and other stakeholders should refrain from using and supporting disinformation and hate speech for any purpose.

“Governments must guarantee a free, viable, independent and diverse media landscape with strong protection for journalists. Digital platforms must ensure security and privacy in all products,” the Secretary General suggests.

In addition, as Guterres notes, technology companies should move away from business models in which “interaction is prioritized over human rights, privacy and security.”

Advertisers and digital platforms should ensure that ads are not placed alongside online disinformation or hate speech, and that ads containing disinformation are not promoted, Guterres said. According to his proposal, digital platforms should be transparent and provide researchers and scientists with access to data while respecting user privacy.
