Iran is ready to review its nuclear doctrine in the event of an existential threat.

Iran will reconsider its nuclear doctrine if the Islamic republic faces a threat to its existence. This statement was made by the adviser to the country’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the head of Iran’s Strategic Council for International Relations Kamal Kharazi.

“We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb, but if Iran’s existence is threatened, we will have no choice but to change our military doctrine,” Kharazi said.

On April 18, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that Iran is ready to review its nuclear doctrine if Israel threatens to attack the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities. At the same time, the country has a fatwa (theological conclusion) from the spiritual leader that the production of nuclear weapons is contrary to Islam. Iranian politicians cite this fatwa as an argument for the exclusively peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program.
