Serbia has won the respect of the world by defending its independence and international justice in the face of a difficult external environment and risks, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday at a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

“Faced with a complex external environment, risks and challenges, Serbia has firmly adhered to independence, resolutely defended its state sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity, and unwaveringly upheld international justice and impartiality, winning broad respect from the international community,” Xi said at the meeting in Belgrade.

He called Vucic an outstanding statesman with a strategic vision and a sense of historical responsibility.

“Under your leadership, Serbia has maintained political stability, rapid economic development, the standard of living of the people is constantly improving, and the power of the state and the international status of Serbia have grown significantly. As a true friend and good partner of Serbia, we are sincerely happy about this,” Xi Jinping added.

On Tuesday evening, Xi Jinping arrived in Serbia on a state visit, his second after 2016. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and his wife Tamara solemnly welcomed Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan at Belgrade airport. The leaders of the two countries held talks on Wednesday.
