The death toll from floods in Brazil has exceeded 70 people, the national civil defense service reports.

Earlier, the O Globo newspaper, citing data from the authorities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, reported that the death toll as a result of heavy rains and devastating floods in southern Brazil had risen to 66, with 101 people still missing.

“The rain situation in Rio Grande do Sul as of 05/05/2024: 150 people were injured, … 72 people died,” the department said in a statement on the social network X.

On its social media account X, the National Defense Service also reported that 103 people are missing so far. According to the department, more than 680 thousand people were affected by flooding in the state.

 


Heavy rainfall began in Brazil’s southernmost state on the border with Uruguay on Monday. Amid unfavorable forecasts, a delegation led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in the region, the administration of the Brazilian leader previously announced.
